Israeli settler terrorism makes no distinction between Christian and Muslim
Acquittal of settler who assaulted a nun in Jerusalem sparks criticism… “Psychotic state” as an alternative to accountability
In a decision that has sparked a new wave of criticism, an Israeli court acquitted settler Yona Schreiber of criminal responsibility for assaulting a nun in Jerusalem, based on his claim that he was suffering from a psychotic state at the time of the attack, while recommending his admission to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.
The ruling came after French demands to prosecute Schreiber for the assault, in a case that has raised outrage and questions about the seriousness of the Israeli authorities in holding those who attack religious figures in Jerusalem accountable.
The excuse of “psychological state” does not appear to be a new one in the context of attacks related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict; Critics point to the repeated use of mental health issues in several cases involving Israelis who have committed attacks against Palestinians, arguing that such defenses can, in some instances, become a pretext for evading responsibility and escaping punishment, rather than ensuring genuine accountability commensurate with the severity of the acts committed.
The acquittal of Schreiber brings this debate back to the forefront and raises a direct question: Is a referral for psychological treatment sufficient to close a case of assault, or does justice also require redress for the victim and ensuring accountability?
