To President Abu Mazen: Elections Must Be Postponed to Safeguard What Remains of the National Project
At this critical juncture for the Palestinian people, protecting the national project and preserving the unity of Palestinian decision-making take precedence over any electoral process.
Thus, calling for the postponement of elections does not signify a rejection of democracy or a retreat from the people’s right to choose their representatives. Rather, it calls for prudence until conditions are established that guarantee free, fair, and transparent elections—ensuring the process does not become a gateway to reshaping the Palestinian landscape amidst war, division, and regional pressures.
Mr. President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), the conspiracy—as perceived by many of our people—has revealed its objectives: to strike at the Palestinian national project, weaken its institutions and the unity of its decision-making, and pave the way for alternative schemes that do not necessarily serve the interests of the Palestinian people.
Under these circumstances, holding elections without clear political and on-the-ground guarantees could deepen division rather than end it, potentially turning the democratic process into an arena of conflict between various power centers and factions.
Today, Palestine needs to safeguard its national decision-making, put its internal house in order, and fortify its institutions. It must ensure that any future elections are a genuine expression of the people’s will, rather than a product of exceptional circumstances or external pressures.
Postponement—provided it is temporary, clearly defined, and aimed at protecting the national project—is not a retreat from democracy; indeed, it can serve as a step toward safeguarding democracy itself.
What is required at this moment is to put Palestine and the national project first, prioritizing the unity of the people and their decision-making above any electoral or factional calculations.
