The Tragedy of the Al-Saada 7 Building Reopens the File on Complaints and Accountability in Gaza; Responsibility Lies with the Hamas Government
Gaza – The tragedy of the Al-Saada 7 building—which, according to estimates circulating among neighbors, resulted in approximately 100 casualties—has reopened the file regarding building safety and the complaints previously raised about the property before the war broke out.
According to accounts from local residents, the building had been the subject of complaints and concerns regarding its safety prior to the war. Some of these complaints had reached the courts and relevant authorities; notably, the sister of the person sharing this account was among those who filed complaints.
The account also includes allegations that legal proceedings regarding the matter were halted following instructions to close the case, amidst talk of vested interests linked to the building’s lower floors. These allegations require an official investigation and supporting documentation to be substantiated.
The disaster also raises questions regarding the responsibility of the authorities controlling the area during the war: Did they receive prior warnings or information about the building’s hazardous condition? What measures did they take to protect residents and evacuate areas posing a threat to their lives?
Activists and the victims’ families have called for an independent, comprehensive investigation to determine the causes of the building’s collapse, verify the existence of prior complaints or warnings, and establish legal and administrative accountability for any proven negligence.
In this context, questions were directed at senior Hamas official Basem Naim regarding whether the movement or the responsible authorities possessed prior information about the building’s danger, and what measures were taken before the disaster occurred.
The most critical questions remain: Were there prior warnings? Why was the building—or the area—not evacuated if a danger had been established? And who bears responsibility for the lives lost? The results of any independent official investigation are expected to reveal the truth of what happened, free from unsubstantiated accusations or attempts to assign blame to a party without evidence.
