Statements from Mukhtars in Gaza: An Immoral Alignment with Hamas – Absence in Times of Crisis, Loud Voices After the Catastrophe
While Gaza continues to bleed from its open wounds and endures one of the most severe humanitarian disasters in its modern history, some statements from mukhtars have emerged, laden with empty slogans and flowery phrases that neither feed the hungry nor shelter the displaced. These words seem detached from reality, as if they emanate from another world, one that does not see the tattered tents, does not hear the cries of starving children, and does not feel the bitterness of families who have lost their children, their homes, and their future.
The question that forcefully presents itself is: Where were these mukhtars when Gaza was being bombarded over the heads of its people? Where were their voices when people were forced to sleep in the streets, when schools were transformed into displacement centers, when the sick died for lack of medicine, and the hungry for lack of food? Where were they when the people were facing their fate alone under bombardment, siege, and starvation?
What exacerbates the public outrage over these statements is what many see as an unethical and biased alignment with Hamas, at a time when the mukhtars were expected to remain impartial and stand first and foremost with the suffering and pain of the people. Instead of being an independent voice for the afflicted community, some of their positions appeared to be an attempt to provide social and political cover for policies and decisions that have had disastrous consequences for the lives of citizens.
The moral obligation was to raise their voices in defense of civilians, their rights, and their dignity, and to demand accountability for all those who contributed to deepening the tragedy, not to merely offer rhetoric that justifies, ignores, or evades the crucial questions raised by the people of Gaza. This unethical alignment with any authority or faction at the expense of truth and the suffering of the victims cannot be justified under any pretext, as it represents an abdication of the social and national responsibility that those who speak on behalf of the people are supposed to bear.
Today, as Gaza remains mired in the effects of war, destruction, hunger, and displacement, any discourse that does not begin by acknowledging the suffering of the people and their right to accountability will remain merely an attempt to market a political narrative that does not reflect the reality of what citizens are experiencing on the ground.
