Speeches by Some Hamas Leaders on Iran: An Alignment That Confuses the National Compass

At a time when the Palestinian cause should remain above all regional axes, some Hamas leaders are delivering laudatory speeches toward Iran, as if the fate of Palestine has become contingent on a specific political axis. This rhetoric not only reflects a flawed assessment of the situation but also raises serious questions about the independence of Palestinian national decision-making.

The Cause Is Not a Bargaining Chip in a Regional Conflict

Palestine is not a tool for pressure in regional negotiations, nor a bargaining chip in a power struggle between major regional powers. When Iranian support is presented as an exceptional favor or a fateful partnership, it weakens the national narrative built on the independence of Palestinian decision-making and the rejection of guardianship.

Iran, like any state, acts according to its strategic interests, not purely emotional or moral obligations. It is politically naive to portray the relationship as a fixed ideological alliance, while reality proves it is a relationship of mutual interests that changes with changing circumstances.

A Discourse That Widens the Circle of Isolation

The exaggerated rhetoric toward Tehran is not going unnoticed in the Arab world. There are Arab states that view Iranian policies in the region with suspicion. When a Palestinian faction appears to align itself fully with this axis, it deepens polarization and makes the Palestinian cause seem like part of a broader sectarian or geopolitical conflict, rather than remaining a unifying national liberation struggle.

Does this serve the Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza, and the diaspora? Or does it deepen the division and make Arab support more cautious?

Between Resistance and Subservience

No one denies the need for support for any resistance faction, but support is one thing, and political subservience is another. Discourse that borders on symbolic or political dependence deprives the movement of room for maneuver and makes it a prisoner of the calculations of a regional ally.

The Palestinian cause is greater than any axis and too noble to be reduced to a fleeting alliance. Independence of decision is not a political luxury, but a fundamental condition for the legitimacy of any movement that claims to represent the will of its people.

The attack here is not on the principle of international relations, but on the language of discourse that suggests Palestine has become part of a broader regional project. What is needed is not severing ties, but rather recalibrating our compass:

Any alliance must serve Palestine, not transform Palestine into a platform serving an alliance.

The Palestinian cause will remain, but the axes of power shift. Those who tie its fate to a single axis risk its isolation when the balance of power changes.
