Mustafa Barghouti from a Luxury Qatari Hotel: When Words Fail the Bereaved
A statement attributed to Mustafa Barghouti sparked widespread controversy: “They killed 22,000 children, but Gaza has given birth to 82,000 in their place. This is a miracle, and we will succeed.” Many viewed this phrasing as insensitive to the magnitude of the humanitarian tragedy being endured by the people of Gaza.
There is no dispute that the continuation of life in Gaza, amidst war and destruction, embodies resilience and a determination to survive. Likewise, the birth of children in the direst circumstances signifies hope and a tenacious hold on life. However, this positive sentiment is vastly different from implying that newborns serve as “replacements” for the children who were killed.
A human being is not merely a figure in a demographic equation; one life cannot simply be replaced by another. Every child who was martyred had a name, a face, dreams, and a family still living with the pain of their loss. A child born today does not take the place of a sibling who was killed, nor does the joy of a new birth erase the tragedy of loss.
In major humanitarian issues, words become part of one’s moral responsibility. While a speaker may intend to emphasize that Gaza—despite the tragedy—remains capable of life and endurance, the choice of words can convey a completely different message, opening the door to interpretations that are deeply painful for the victims’ families.
Defending Gaza does not require diminishing the value of those we have lost or reducing martyrs to replaceable statistics. Rather, the strength of the Palestinian cause lies in upholding human dignity and acknowledging that every soul lost is an irreplaceable loss. Mustafa Barghouti—who is associated with the “Qatari line”—was born in Jerusalem on January 1, 1954, and hails from the village of Deir Ghassana, north of Ramallah. He is a political activist whose election campaign sparked allegations of corruption; certain Palestinian quarters accused him of concealing the true amount of donations he had raised for his campaign in the United States and Europe.
